First, contemplating the body as impure: that is, the contaminated form aggregate possesses five kinds of impurity. First, impurity of seed: riding on the karmic consciousness seeds of the past and taking up the semen and blood of the present parents, they combine to form the body. Therefore the Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: "This body is like an illusion, arising from inversion; this body is like a shadow, appearing from karmic conditions." The Mahāprajñāpāramitōpadeśa says: "The seed of this body is impure, / Not other wondrous jewels; / It does not arise from among flowers, / But emerges only from an unclean path." Second, impurity of dwelling place: inside the mother's womb, dwelling below the stomach of crude food and above the stomach of digested food, constantly subject to foul-smelling impurities. Therefore the Mahāprajñāpāramitōpadeśa says: "This body is like a foul thing, / Not born from among flowers, / Nor existing from campaka, / Nor emerging from a jewel mountain." Third, impurity of intrinsic nature: combining thirty-six substances to form the body. That is, externally there are twelve: hair, body hair, nails, teeth, eye rheum, tears, mucus, saliva, dirt, sweat, feces, and urine. Next there are twelve: outer skin, inner skin, blood, flesh, sinews, vessels, bones, marrow, fat, grease, brain, and membrane. Internally there are twelve: spleen, kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, gallbladder, intestines, stomach, red phlegm, white phlegm, stomach of crude food, and stomach of digested food. The Mahāprajñāpāramitōpadeśa says: "The substance of earth, water, fire, and wind / Can hold and receive impurities; / Even emptying the ocean to wash this body / Cannot make it fragrant and clean." Fourth, impurity of specific characteristics: the nine apertures constantly flow with impure substances. Therefore the Mahāprajñāpāramitōpadeśa says: "All kinds of impure substances / Fill the body; / Constantly flowing forth without ceasing, / Like a leaking bag containing things." Fifth, ultimate impurity: once life ends, it swells, rots, decomposes, is foul, vile, and scattered, unbearable to behold. Therefore the Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: "Though this body is temporarily bathed, clothed, and fed, it must eventually return to destruction." The Mahāprajñāpāramitōpadeśa says: "Examining and truly contemplating this body, / It ultimately returns to the place of death; / Hard to control, lacking reciprocity, / Ungrateful like a small child." The Suvarṇaprabhāsa also says: "Though constantly provided for, it harbors resentment and harm; / In the end it abandons me, ungrateful."
