The ruler of the kingdom of Śrāvastī, King Prasenajit, had a minister named Sudatta. While arranging a marriage for his son, he went in person to Rājagṛha and stayed at the house of the elder Candana. At midnight, the elder arose, adorned his house, and prepared delicacies. Hearing this, Sudatta asked, "Great Being, are you inviting the king for a wedding gathering?" He replied, "I am inviting the Buddha, the unsurpassed King of the Dharma." Hearing this, Sudatta's hair stood on end, and he asked again, "Who is called Buddha?" The elder spoke extensively of the Buddha's virtues. Sudatta said, "Excellent is what you say, Great Being! The Buddha's virtues are unsurpassed. Where is he now?" The elder replied, "In the Karaṇḍa Veṇuvana monastery in Rājagṛha." Sudatta then single-mindedly recollected the Buddha; suddenly dawn broke, and its blazing light was like daylight. Following the light, he arrived at the city gate. Through the Buddha's supernatural power, the gate opened of itself, and he proceeded along the road. At that time, the Tathāgata had come out to walk back and forth. Seeing him, Sudatta leapt for joy, and not knowing proper etiquette, directly questioned the World-Honoured One. Then a Śuddhāvāsa god transformed into four people for the elder's sake, who went to the World-Honoured One, bowed at his feet, knelt on their right knees to greet him, circumambulated him three times to the right, and withdrew to stand on one side. Seeing this, Sudatta imitated them. The World-Honoured One then preached the Dharma to him as appropriate; upon hearing it, the elder attained the fruit of a stream-enterer. Later he again invited the Buddha: "I pray that you deign to come to the city of Śrāvastī to accept my humble offering." The Buddha asked, "Does your kingdom of Śrāvastī have a monastery capable of accommodating me?" Sudatta said, "If you will truly favor us with a visit, I will arrange it at once." The World-Honoured One then silently accepted the invitation. Sudatta returned to Śrāvastī, and the Buddha ordered Śāriputra to go with him to instruct on the ceremonies for building a monastery. Thereupon Sudatta spread gold to purchase the grove of Prince Jeta, and Prince Jeta donated the trees in the grove; the two together constructed the monastery. When it was finished, he held an incense burner, faced Rājagṛha, and from afar made this proclamation: "The preparations are complete; I pray only that the Tathāgata accept this residence." At that time, knowing the elder's intention beforehand, the Buddha set out from Rājagṛha together with the great assembly, arriving at Jeta's Grove in the time it takes a strong man to bend and stretch his arm. At that time, the elder presented what he had prepared as an offering to the Buddha; having accepted it, the Buddha took up residence therein. This is fully explained in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, the Sūtra of the Wise and the Foolish, the Four-Part Vinaya, and the Great Tang Records on the Western Regions; those who need it may look it up. Now the Buddha expounded the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra here; hence it is said, "in the kingdom of Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park."
