On "Śāriputra and the others": the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* says: "In a village in Magadha there was a brāhmaṇa named Dhanada who had eight sons. Among them, one son was named Upatiṣya, who is Śāriputra. There was another brāhmaṇa who gave birth to a son named Kolita, who is Maudgalyāyana. These two youths were close friends and left home under the non-Buddhist Sañjaya. With one mind, the two made a vow: 'If we find a master superior to this one who can expound for us the superior path of nectar, we will certainly come to accord and awakening together.' At that time, the World-Honoured One had a disciple named Aśvajit, whose deportment was serene as he entered the city to beg for food, his movements having measure. When Śāriputra saw him, he followed him to where he stopped and said, 'O worthy one! Are you the master? Or are you a disciple?' Aśvajit said, 'There is another great master; I am a disciple.' He asked again, 'What Dharma does your great master expound?' He replied, 'All dharmas arise from causes; all dharmas cease from causes; such cessation and arising, my master expounds thus.' When Śāriputra heard these words, right there, separated from dust and free from defilement, he obtained the purity of the Dharma eye. Returning to where they stayed, he spoke of it to Maudgalyāyana, and it was also like this. The two together led all their disciples and went together to the Buddha to seek to leave home. The Buddha called out 'Welcome!', their beards and hair fell out of themselves, kāṣāyas covered their bodies, they held alms-bowls, took on the appearance of bhikṣus, and among the śrāvaka assembly they each became foremost in wisdom and supernatural powers. These two hundred followers all were able to leave home, immediately received the complete precepts, and ultimately attained the fruit of arhatship."
