Regarding "superiority of causes": the three poisons are greed, anger, and delusion; this clarifies that they can harm sentient beings, hence they are deprecatingly called poisons. Since their arising is unwholesome, long subduing them is called wholesome roots. Hence the Avataṃsaka Sūtra states: "All evil karmas I have committed in the past are entirely due to beginningless greed, anger, and delusion." The Vijñaptimātratā states: "Wholesomeness refers to the three roots of faith, shame/remorse, non-greed, etc.; having the meaning of growing, they are called roots." Wholesome and unwholesome both stem from these three; if one can subdue them, it is called superiority of causes. Only when both causes and conditions are superior does this faith arise. Thus we know that true faith is truly not easy to attain. A single thought is already like this, how much more so eternal faith, as well as upholding, reciting, and explaining?
