"Seeing and cultivating, etc." means that the upper two realms each have three kinds of afflictions of cultivation, namely greed, ignorance, and arrogance. These afflictions are subtle and hard to eliminate, so they are divided across the eight grounds. Each ground is divided into nine grades, making seventy-two grades in all. Each grade has one uninterrupted path and one liberation path; severing up to seventy-one grades is called approaching an arhat, and severing all seventy-two grades of afflictions is becoming an arhat. Severing afflictions for this fruit is like climbing a storied pavilion, stepping gradually higher. Considering seeing and cultivating together, combining the one ground of the desire realm, eighty-nine grades of asaṃskṛta in total serve as the essence of this fruit.
