"Shouldering and carrying, etc.": what is on the shoulders is called dān (carrying on the shoulder), and what is borne on the back is called hè (carrying on the back). Here it clarifies that practicing the bodhisattva path is itself shouldering and carrying. That is, converting those below with great compassion, seeking [wisdom] above with great wisdom, deploying both with great vows, placing them upon the shoulders of vigor, going forth from the afflictions of birth and death, without stopping for a single thought-moment, straight to the true nature of bodhi, until self and other are simultaneously liberated—only then setting down this burden. This explanation is fully found in the Lamp of the Dharma Sūtra (Fa ju jing). Now the sūtra says: upholding, reading, and reciting is benefiting oneself; explaining it extensively for others is benefiting others. Since the two benefits are practiced together, they must take great vows as their essence; because of this, one can prevent the lineage of the Buddhas from being severed, hence it is called "shouldering bodhi".
