高遠等者，謂下據金輪高八萬由旬，六萬諸山而為眷屬，故名為大。故《華嚴疏》云：「須彌橫海落群峰之高。」
"Towering and distant, etc.": this means that it rests below on the golden wheel, rises eighty thousand yojanas high, and has sixty thousand mountains as its retinue; thus it is called "great." Hence the Commentary on the Avataṃsaka Sūtra states: "Sumeru traverses the ocean, towering above the multitude of peaks."
