"That is itself bodhi" explains "not unreal." This has three meanings: First, in the absence of characteristics such as form, it reveals that the signless true principle is itself the characteristic of bodhi. Second, the characteristics such as form are themselves taken as the characteristics of bodhi, because the lack of self-nature in form and the rest is itself bodhi—just as an image having no independent entity is itself the bright mirror; revealing emptiness right within form does not wait for its destruction; hence it says that that is itself the characteristic of bodhi, characteristic being identical to nature. Third, bodhi has no characteristics, yet it takes form and the rest as characteristics, because bodhi is tathatā, and tathatā accords with conditions to become form and the rest. The treatise says: "Untaintedness and ignorance are both identical with the nature and characteristics of tathatā."
