6.158

爾炎，梵語，此有兩義：一謂智母，已如前說。二謂境界，然是定中境界，今取此義。意云：佛智稱境而知，真如是有作有知，眾生是無作無知也。若作智母釋者，即根本智證平等理，無有分別，今觀眾生亦復如是也。

"Jñeya" is Sanskrit and has two meanings: first, it means the "mother of cognition", as already explained before; second, it means the "cognitive sphere"—here, however, it is the sphere within samādhi, and this latter meaning is adopted now. The meaning is: the Buddha's cognition knows in accord with the sphere; tathatā has activity and knowing, while sentient beings lack activity and knowing. If it were explained as the mother of cognition, it would be the fundamental cognition realizing the principle of equality without vikalpa, and now contemplating sentient beings is also like this.
