取意等者。先德皆云：「敵對唐梵則奘稱能，取意譯經則什為最。」然雲等三喻，則直下翦除，於餘六中又換一喻，謂以影代翳也。所以換者，影並於翳，空義顯故。

"Capturing the meaning," etc.: Former masters all said: "For literal equivalence between Chinese and Sanskrit, Xuanzang is called the most skilled; for capturing the meaning when translating sūtras, Kumārajīva is supreme." As for the three analogies such as clouds, he cut them out directly; among the remaining six, he exchanged one analogy, namely using shadow in place of defective vision (timira). The reason for replacing it is that shadow, compared to defective vision, makes the meaning of emptiness more evident.
