"Dāna encompasses the myriad practices": The Sanskrit sound dāna is translated here as "giving." "Encompasses" means gathering and subsuming the myriad practices; that is, the practices cultivated by a bodhisattva are not merely ten thousand, but here a general large number is cited. Because giving encompasses the three kinds of giving, the three kinds of giving subsume the six perfections, and the six perfections contain the myriad practices, viewing the branch from the root, it is called "dāna encompasses the myriad practices." Therefore, when the Buddha replied regarding cultivation, he spoke only of giving. Thus Maitreya's verse says: "The meaning of dāna subsumes the six, / [namely,] material goods, fearlessness, and the Dharma. / Herein one, two, and three / are called the abode of cultivation."
