"Refuting the distinctions of the solitary vehicle" means that Kāśyapa abandoned the rich and begged from the poor with the intent of letting them generate merit, whereas Subhūti abandoned the poor and begged from the rich, not wishing to trouble others, and so forth. The views of the two men mutually had their rights and wrongs; the Tathāgata differed from this, harmonizing right and wrong into one continuum. Among the above five, the first is great wisdom, the second is great compassion, the third is displaying virtue, the fourth is quieting ordinary people, and the fifth is refuting the lesser [vehicle].
