The commentary's "putting away the requisites" explains "he put away his robe and bowl" in the sūtra. The two words "eating the food" are as explained before. Qiliao means completed. The necessity of putting away the requisites is because when cultivating samādhi, one must possess the five conditions, namely: dwelling in a secluded and quiet place, desisting from various involvements and affairs, and so forth. Although the Buddha is the supreme sage and devoid of all habitual propensities, truly giving rise to no anxiety or concern regarding the robe and bowl, if he did not put them away, later people who emulate him would have no way to attain samādhi. Since the Buddha is the lord of the teaching, whatever he does, people all emulate and learn from; therefore it is said that he manifested this as a model for posterity.
