[Regarding] 'reading and reciting...' and so forth: This refers to practicing reading and reciting based on the broad scope of the wisdom arisen from hearing; if one had heard nothing, upon what would one rely to read and recite? This is the wisdom arisen from hearing. The treatise says: 'Vast and extensive reading and study are also called the wisdom arisen from hearing.' However, in all cases speaking of 'practicing' is a general description. It is not the wisdom arisen from cultivation among the three wisdoms, because the wisdom arisen from cultivation accords with principle, is exclusively restricted to the uncontaminated, and transcends the four dharmas such as reading; therefore it is not matched with it, but is only accomplished together by the two wisdoms of hearing and thinking. Therefore the commentary next says: 'Thus, hearing the Dharma from another...' and so forth.
