From "Subhūti" downwards: one ought to say that there truly are sentient beings who can have faith in this Dharma. Those who can believe are not ordinary sentient beings, nor are they not sentient beings of the noble nature. The treatise says: "'Non-sentient beings': because they do not have the substance of ordinary beings. 'Not non-sentient beings': because they possess the noble substance, they are not without the noble substance." The verse says: "Sentient beings who are not sentient beings, / Neither noble nor not noble; / Herein, the noble substance / Is the vision and knowledge of the Buddha." This is because it is the root of faith.
