The Buddha is not seen through marks. The sūtra's intent is: having heard that the provisional is manifested based on the real and that the provisional is not separate from the real, when one seeks the real by relying on the provisional, the real does not originate from the provisional; real virtue does not lie in marks, and fine appearances are seldom associated with true virtue. Those who judge by appearance lost Ziyu; from now on, how could I dare fail to recognize this?
