Answer: "The former doubted taking up in contrast to non-taking; this doubts there being a person in contrast to no person. However, both this and the twelfth arise from the eleventh. Because that text said there is no one who brings forth the bodhimind, the Buddha's intention was merely to wipe away the mind of self and person, not to annihilate the bodhisattva. Subhūti did not understand this intention, and assumed that self and person were no different from a bodhisattva. For this reason, where Subhūti gave rise to doubt he said 'if there are no bodhisattvas,' while where the Tathāgata severed the doubt he said 'no person.' Both sides were implicit and never explicitly stated, until here where it is finally clarified. The sūtra text specifically says: 'One who thoroughly comprehends that dharmas lack self, the Tathāgata says is truly named a bodhisattva.'"
