"The treatise says," and so forth: explaining it. The meaning says: because the mental consciousness abides, it becomes inverted; because it is inverted, merit is entirely illusory. The Buddha's wisdom has no abiding; creating merit based on it is non-inverted; because it is non-inverted, it is entirely real. Grasping signs is contaminated merit, hence it is not said to be great. Being free from signs is uncontaminated merit, hence it is said to be great.
