"Lacking wisdom, etc.": here phenomena and similes are combined, and the text remains somewhat abbreviated. If fully matched, there are four pairs of phenomena and similes: using the sun to symbolize wisdom, the stars to symbolize consciousness, light to symbolize awakening, and darkness to symbolize delusion. As in the simile, the meaning is that in the darkness without the sun there is starlight, whereas in the light with the sun there is no starlight; in the phenomena, in the delusion without wisdom there is the functioning of consciousness, whereas in the awakening with wisdom there is no vikalpa. It is like a dark night when the sunlight is gone, and only the stars remain to vaguely discern north from south; as soon as the bright sun appears, the starlight naturally ceases to remain visible. In the Dharma it is also thus: in the delusion of saṃsāra, when innate wisdom has not yet appeared, the differentiation of mental consciousness seems to possess discernment; if wisdom is displayed and radiant light shines everywhere, differentiated thoughts vanish without remainder.
