"The root treatise," and so forth: As explained in the subsequent text, the world of sentient beings is the realm of sentient beings. Because mental phenomena have no physical substance and cannot be broken down, they are refuted simply through the expedient of non-thinking: when thought of, they exist; when not thought of, they do not exist. Hence the Awakening of Faith says: "When the mind arises, phenomena arise; when the mind ceases, phenomena cease," and so forth.
