This explains straightforwardly the reason why producing faith gains merit, embracing both the emptiness of sentient beings and the emptiness of dharmas. The treatise says: 'Those with wisdom thoroughly understand both the selflessness of sentient beings and the selflessness of dharmas.' It also says: 'Sentient beings and dharmas each have four kinds of notions.' Notions are marks. Saying that they no longer have the four marks of a self, a person, a sentient being, and a life-span refers to the emptiness of sentient beings. Saying that they have no mark of dharmas nor any mark of non-dharmas—in other translations there is additionally 'having no marks and also not non-marks'—refers to the emptiness of dharmas. The commentary says: 'First it lists four marks for the emptiness of sentient beings; next it lists only two phrases for the emptiness of dharmas, namely dharmas and non-dharmas, because the translator simply abbreviated it.'
