1.64

「須菩提！於意云何？阿羅漢能作是念：『我得阿羅漢果』不？」須菩提言：「不也。世尊！何以故？實無有法名阿羅漢。世尊！若阿羅漢作是念：『我得阿羅漢』，即為著我人眾生壽者。世尊！佛說我得無諍三昧最為第一，世尊說我是離欲阿羅漢。世尊！我不作是念：『我是離欲阿羅漢』。世尊！我若作是念：『我得阿羅漢。』世尊則不記我無諍行第一。」

"Subhūti, what do you think? Can an arhat form this thought: 'I have attained the fruit of an arhat'?" Subhūti said: "No, World-Honored One. Why is this? In reality there is no dharma named arhat. World-Honored One, if an arhat forms this thought: 'I have attained arhatship,' they would be attached to a self, a person, a sentient being, and a life-span. World-Honored One, the Buddha has said that among those who attain the samādhi of non-contention, I am foremost; the World-Honored One has said that I am an arhat free from desire. World-Honored One, I do not form this thought: 'I am an arhat free from desire.' World-Honored One, if I formed this thought: 'I have attained arhatship,' the World-Honored One would not have predicted that I am foremost in the practice of non-contention."
