1.86

佛言：「須菩提！於意云何？可以三十二大人相見如來不？」須菩提言：「不也。世尊！何以故？如來說三十二大人相即是非相，是名三十二大人相。」佛言：「須菩提！若有善男子善女人，以恒河沙等身命布施；若復有人於此法門中，乃至受持四句偈等為他人說，其福甚多無量阿僧祇。」

The Buddha said: "Subhūti! What do you think? Can one perceive the Tathāgata by means of the thirty-two marks of a great man?" Subhūti said: "No, World-Honoured One! Why is that? What the Tathāgata preaches as the thirty-two marks of a great man are precisely non-marks; they are named the thirty-two marks of a great man." The Buddha said: "Subhūti! If there were a good man or good woman who gave away their lives and bodies as many as the sands of the Ganges; and if again there were a person who, within this dharma gate, even receives and upholds a four-line verse, etc., and explains it to others, their merit would be exceedingly great, immeasurable asaṃkhyeyas."
