"Subhūti, what do you think? Do you suppose the Tathāgata forms this thought: 'I liberate sentient beings'? Subhūti, do not form this thought. Why is this? In reality there are no sentient beings whom the Tathāgata liberates." The Buddha said: "Subhūti, if there were real sentient beings whom the Tathāgata liberates, the Tathāgata would possess the notions of a self, a person, a sentient being, and a life-span. Subhūti, what the Tathāgata speaks of as having a self is not having a self, yet childish ordinary beings take it to be having a self. Subhūti, childish ordinary beings the Tathāgata speaks of as non-beings; therefore they are called childish ordinary beings."
