"Subhūti, what do you think? Did the Tathāgata attain anuttarasamyaksambodhi by means of any dharma in the presence of Dīpaṅkara Buddha?" Subhūti said to the Buddha, "No, World-Honored One. As I understand the meaning of what the Buddha has said, the Buddha had no dharma by which he attained anuttarasamyaksambodhi in the presence of Dīpaṅkara Buddha." The Buddha said, "So it is, so it is. Subhūti, there was truly no dharma by which the Tathāgata attained anuttarasamyaksambodhi in the presence of Dīpaṅkara Buddha. Subhūti, if there had been a dharma by which the Tathāgata attained anuttarasamyaksambodhi, Dīpaṅkara Buddha would not have bestowed the prediction upon me: 'In a future age you will become a Buddha named Śākyamuni.' Because there was truly no dharma by which anuttarasamyaksambodhi was attained, Dīpaṅkara Buddha bestowed the prediction upon me, saying: 'Māṇava, in a future age you will become a Buddha named Śākyamuni.' Why is this? Subhūti, what is called the 'Tathāgata' is the reality of tathatā."
