Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain: this is translated as Numinous Vulture. Śākyamuni Bodhisattva was once a vulture in the past, nurturing his parents in this mountain; it took its name from this, hence it is called Numinous Vulture. Furthermore, south of Rājagṛha there is a śmaśāna (charnel ground) where vultures reside and consume many dead bodies. When someone is about to die, vultures soar over their home and cry mournfully, whereby people know beforehand. Because they know of people's deaths, it is called Numinous Vulture. Moreover, the mountain has five peaks: the Elephant Head in the east, the Horse Head in the south, the Sheep Head in the west, the Lion Head in the north, and the Vulture Head in the centre; hence it also obtains the name Vulture Mountain. Question: Why did the Buddha preach the Dharma specifically facing Vulture Mountain while in the royal city? Answer: Relying on the Fahua lun (Saddharmapuṇḍarīkopadeśa), it says: "Just as Rājagṛha is superior to other cities, Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain is superior to other mountains. Because the Buddha was in a superior place, he revealed that this Dharma door is superior." Now, since this prajñā is the most superior Dharma, he specially expounded it approaching the royal city and Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain. "Among" signifies expounding the Middle Way prajñā.
