From "together with a great bhikṣu saṅgha" downwards is the sixth [section], listing the assembly who heard [the teaching] together. The assemblies listed in the sūtras do not exceed four kinds: first, the assembly of reflection, which refers to Buddhas and bodhisattvas who have already completed the great fruit and come to reflect [and support] in order to make the true Dharma abide long in the world; second, the assembly of forming affinities, who hear in the present without obtaining benefit, but merely create causes and conditions for attaining the path in the future; third, the initiating assembly, wherein Dharma-body bodhisattvas encourage one another to request the Tathāgata to speak and jointly benefit sentient beings; fourth, the assembly of primary receptivity, who planted causes in ancient times and whose fruit is fulfilled in this life, being able to awaken and enter immediately upon hearing the Dharma. Bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, upāsikās, and so forth each have four meanings, which can be understood by deduction.
