問：菩薩地云何言佛眼？答：《法華》云「開佛知見」，即別教初地、圓教初住，發三種智：一正因理心發，用中道觀開一切種智。二了因智心發，用即空觀開一切智。三緣因善心發，用即假觀開道種智。初地尚得，況九地耶？此但分得，非具得也。

Question: In the bhūmi of a bodhisattva, why speak of the buddha-eye? Answer: The Lotus Sūtra says "opening the vision and knowledge of the Buddha"; that is, at the first bhūmi of the distinctive teaching and the first abode of the perfect teaching, one gives rise to three kinds of wisdom: First, the rational mind of the fundamental cause arises, opening sarvākārajñatā through the contemplation of the Middle Way. Second, the cognitive mind of the revealing cause arises, opening sarvajñatā through the contemplation of identity with emptiness. Third, the wholesome mind of the conditioning cause arises, opening mārgākārajñatā through the contemplation of identity with provisionality. If even the first bhūmi attains them, how much more so the ninth bhūmi? Here, one only attains them partially, not completely.
