From "The merit of actual wisdom" downward, within the fourth [part], praising the virtues, it first praises the virtue of wisdom. Actual wisdom illuminates emptiness, while expedient wisdom illuminates existence. Because they possess actual wisdom, they do not abide in birth-and-death; because they possess expedient [wisdom], they do not abide in nirvāṇa. Although the previous clarification of rank spoke of arhats, now this praise of virtue is distinct from the two vehicles, hence it is spoken of separately. Bodhisattvas of the shared teaching possess actual wisdom within the seventh ground, and possess expedient wisdom from the eighth ground upward, and so forth.
