Question: Why is it called "truth"? Answer: Some say that the object is taken as truth. If so, all cattle, horses, and beasts would also possess the truths. The present interpretation is not so: cognitive illumination according to reality is called "truth". Thus the Viśeṣacintibrahma-paripṛcchā-sūtra says: "Knowing suffering as non-arising, accumulation as non-conjunction, that within the dharma of ultimate cessation there is neither arising nor perishing, being equal toward all dharmas, and attaining the path through the non-dual dharma—this is called the noble truth." Regarding the "twelve links of dependent origination": the two past causes and the five present fruits, and the three present causes and the two future fruits; hence they are called the twelve. From "immeasurable merits are all accomplished" onward is the fifth part, the general conclusion.
