Third, clarifying the central theme of the sūtra. Whoever wishes to lecture on or read a sūtra must first recognize its major purport. This sūtra takes the correct contemplation of anutpāda as its central theme; leaving behind the two views of existence and non-existence, it provisionally speaks of the Madhyamā-pratipad. Therefore the text below states: 'Prajñā is without knowing and without seeing, without functioning and without receiving, without arising and without ceasing, because prajñā is inconceivable.' 'Without arising and without ceasing' is an alternative name for the Madhyamā-pratipad, a distinct designation for inconceivable extinction; it is also called the buddhadhātu, which is the mother of the buddhas of the ten directions. That which is called the 'one great matter' is precisely this matter.
