'Bodhisattvas of the ten virtues' is the first [section] that chants the external ordinary persons. Because they generate a single thought-moment of bodhicitta, they shatter the beginningless wheel of existence; hence it says 'forever parting from the ocean of the wheel of suffering in the three realms'. Although those of the ten faiths have not yet exited the three realms, having already generated the great aspiration to seek exit from the three realms, they are already able to depart from the three evil destinies, so the text speaks in general of 'forever parting'. The Yingluo jing says: At that time, before the abidings, they are called faith-root bodhisattvas, also called prajñapti bodhisattvas, and also called nominal bodhisattvas. If for one kalpa, two kalpas, or three kalpas they cultivate the ten faiths, superior virtue becomes an iron wheel-turning king, middling virtue becomes a scattered millet king, and inferior virtue becomes a human king, being fully possessed of all defilements. In this sūtra, middling and inferior virtues become scattered millet kings; this clarifies their superior kingship. Second, the seven lines from 'nature of practice' onward chant the thirty minds of the patience of suppression prior to the bhūmis above, divided into two: the first two lines separately praise the three grades becoming the three kinds of wheel-turning kings.
