"Great Kings! After my parinirvāṇa, in future generations, the fourfold assembly of disciples, the various kings of lesser realms, crown princes, and royal princes, who ought to be the very ones maintaining and protecting the Three Jewels, will instead turn to ruining and destroying the Three Jewels, just like the worms within the lion's body that feed on the lion itself, and not outsiders (tīrthikas). They will greatly destroy my Buddha-Dharma and incur great guilt and offenses. The correct teachings will decline and weaken, and the populace will lack correct conduct. Gradually engaging in evil, their lifespan will diminish by the day until it reaches one hundred years. People will ruin the Buddha's teachings; there will no longer be filial children, the six kinds of kin will not be in harmony, the heavenly spirits will not grant protection, and pestilence and malignant demons will come daily to inflict harm. Disasters and portents will unfold continuously, with calamities crisscrossing from beginning to end. At death they will enter the hells, hungry ghosts, and animals; if reborn as humans, they will be soldiers and serfs. Retribution is like an echo and like a shadow, like someone writing at night: though the fire is extinguished, the writing remains. Retribution in the three realms is also just like this."
