Explanation: Third, specifically praising their virtues. In total there are nine headings: first, the heading of the factors of the Path; second, the ten totalities (kṛtsnāyatana); third, the eight bases of mastery (abhibhv-āyatana); fourth, the eight liberations (aṣṭa-vimokṣa); fifth, the three wisdoms; sixth, the sixteen truths; seventh, the contemplation of the four truths; eighth, the contemplation of the four practices; ninth, the ten patiences. As for the 'twenty-two factors', the *Original Record* says: "From the nobles who have ascended the bhūmis and above up to the buddha fruit, there are eleven stages, each having concentration and wisdom, combined to make twenty-two factors." Now, our interpretation: This is not so. In the stage of the seven expedients, among the factors of the Path, they only attain the twenty-two factors of the four applications of mindfulness, four right strivings, four bases of supernormal power, five faculties, and five powers, but have not yet been able to attain the seven factors of awakening and the eightfold noble path; therefore it says 'twenty-two factors'.
