Question: For what reason are four assemblies spoken of respectively for humans and devas? Answer: As stated in the fifteenth fascicle of the *Yogācārabhūmi*, eight assemblies are established based on seven causal conditions. Therefore that treatise states: 'Because of four causal conditions, four assemblies are established within the human destiny; because of three causal conditions, four assemblies are established within the deva destiny. Because they are the most supreme; because they are mutually acknowledged by the world as fields of merit; because their consumption and use of material necessities do not depend on others; and because they renounce all worldly material necessities—due to these four conditions, four assemblies are established within the human destiny. Because they are based on the limit of terrestrial existence; because of the limit of the desire realm; and because of the limit of conditioned phenomena—due to these three conditions, four assemblies are established within the deva destiny.' If one follows the distinct explanation of the reasons given in the tenth fascicle of the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa*, fearing verbosity, it is not expounded here.
