問曰：阿難既是聲聞，如何能持大乘經典？答：阿難有三。一者阿難陀，持聲聞法；二者阿難賢，持緣覺法；三者阿難海，持摩訶衍。第三阿難持大乘經，故不相違。如《金剛仙論》及真諦所引《闍王懺悔經》說。

Question: Since Ānanda was a śrāvaka, how could he uphold Mahāyāna scriptures? Answer: There are three Ānandas: first, Ānanda, who upheld the śrāvaka teachings; second, Ānandabhadra, who upheld the pratyekabuddha teachings; third, Ānandasāgara, who upheld the Mahāyāna. The third Ānanda upheld the Mahāyāna sūtras, so there is no contradiction. This is as explained in the *Jin’gangxian lun* and the *Sūtra on King Ajātaśatru’s Repentance* cited by Paramārtha.
