Third, in stating the intention of their combined expression, the *Buddhabhūmyupadeśa* says: “One should know that stating this ‘Thus have I heard’ is intended to avoid the fault of adding, subtracting, or altering. That is to say: ‘Such a teaching as this I heard from the Buddha, not passed down through others.’ It shows that the hearer had capability, and whatever he heard was free from the fault of adding, subtracting, or altering. It is not like ordinary beings who lack capability, where whatever they hear might not be free from adding, subtracting, or altering. When compiling the Dharma, those who transmitted the Buddha’s teachings, relying on the Tathāgata’s instruction, first spoke these words so that sentient beings would reverently believe and accept them, saying: ‘Such a teaching as this I heard from the Buddha; its phrasing and meaning are definite, without addition or subtraction.’ Therefore, having properly heard it, the listeners should contemplate it in accordance with the principle and diligently cultivate and train.”
