Explanation: Sixth is the virtue of the contemplation gateway of the three types of emptiness. Regarding the three types of emptiness: first is the emptiness gateway, second is the signless gateway, and third is the wishless gateway. According to the Sarvāstivāda school, the practices of emptiness and non-self are called the emptiness gateway; the four practices under [the truth of] cessation are called the signless; the remaining ten practices are called the wishless; these three are also called the three samādhis, as collated according to the Sautrāntika school. Now, according to the Mahāyāna, the Buddhabhūmi-śāstra states: "The non-self of persons and phenomena that are imagined is called emptiness; the samādhi that takes this as its object is called the emptiness liberation gateway." "Signs" refers to the ten signs: matter, sound, fragrance, taste, touch, male, female, birth, old age, and death (also termed birth, abiding, and cessation); since nirvāṇa lacks these signs, it is called signless; the samādhi that takes this as its object is called the signless liberation gateway. "Wish" refers to aspiring and seeking; contemplating the suffering of the three realms, one has nothing to aspire to or seek, hence it is called wishless; the samādhi that takes this as its object is called the wishless liberation gateway. Fascicle 6 of the Dazhidulun states: "Knowing the true mark of all phenomena, namely ultimate emptiness, is called the emptiness samādhi. Having known this emptiness, not contemplating phenomena as empty or not empty, as existent or non-existent, etc., is called the unconditioned (apraṇihita) samādhi. That all phenomena have no signs, and that one neither accepts nor clings to all phenomena, is called the signless samādhi. Furthermore, the eighteen kinds of emptiness are called the emptiness samādhi. Amidst all varieties of existence, the mind does not seek: this is called the unconditioned samādhi. Shattering all signs and not recollecting them is called the signless samādhi." It is explained in detail as stated there.
