Question: The ten abidings expounded in the Yingluo jing, the Avataṃsaka, and so forth differ from this sūtra; what is the intent? The latter ten abidings are: 1. the abiding of generating the [bodhi-]mind, 2. the abiding of cultivating the ground, 3. the abiding of practice, 4. the abiding of noble rebirth, 5. the abiding of being endowed with expedient means, 6. the abiding of the correct mind, 7. the abiding of non-retrogression, 8. the abiding of the youthful state, 9. the abiding of the prince of the Dharma, and 10. the abiding of coronation. Explanation: Traditionally it has been handed down that there are two kinds of ten abidings: the first is the ten abidings of specific characteristics, such as the abiding of generating the mind and so forth in the Yingluo jing; the second is the ten abidings of common characteristics, in which the mind of faith and so forth are taken as the substance of the ten abidings, because practitioners across all stages practice the ten minds of faith. Therefore, in the Benye jing, regarding the hundred Dharma-gate illuminations of a first-bhūmi bodhisattva, each of the ten faiths has ten minds, which constitute the hundred Dharmas. Now in this sūtra, it is spoken according to the common characteristics, so there is no contradiction.
