Second, explaining the chapter title. "Contemplating the Tathāgata": "contemplating" refers to that which contemplates, whose essence is wisdom; through hearing, reflecting, and cultivating, persons and dharmas are both realized as empty; both preparatory and fundamental/subsequent [wisdoms] are termed contemplation. The associated and co-arising four aggregates or five aggregates serve as its nature according to circumstance. As for "Tathāgata," it refers to that which is contemplated. Original awakening is truly eternal, its nature non-arising and non-ceasing; unawakening deludedly strays from the origin, circulating in delusion; returning to the origin, delusion is eradicated, and illusory dreams are both quieted; as one returns to original suchness, one is called Tathāgata ("Thus-Come"). Although going is without going and coming is without whence to come, in contrast to the going of unawakening it is termed coming. Furthermore, the response and transformation bodies respond to stimuli out of great compassion; appearing in response according to spiritual capacities, they come riding on suchness, and so are also termed Tathāgata. If one said "contemplating emptiness," that would directly speak of dharmatā; here, combining person and dharma, it is called "Contemplating the Tathāgata." Furthermore, establishing chapter titles has three types: first, based on brevity—namely, this chapter, where prajñā was previously expounded extensively and now one contemplates the Tathāgata, revealing the extensive through the brief, it is titled "Chapter of the Tathāgata." Second, based on extensiveness—Chapter "Bodhisattva Practice" clarifies the bodhisattva practices from beginning to end, so it is titled Chapter of the Bodhisattva. Third, based on the actual characteristics—namely, the next four chapters, which state their meanings according to their names to manifest the chapter designations. The first and last two chapters establish their names based on extensiveness; following their meanings and categories, the general pattern is just this. The explanation of the chapter and its sequence should be known in accordance with the above.
