The commentary states: Below 'Because of this, it is able to be the root of sentient beings', there are two meanings. Some say: 'this' refers to the original awakening above; that is, because original awakening accords with non-awakening, stirring and slumbering in the three realms and transmigrating through the six destinies, this original awakening is the root of sentient beings. Regarding 'is also the root of practice of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas', as ignorance becomes subtle and thin, the power of original awakening increases, and the mind returns to its original source; proceeding from the branch toward the root, the five kṣāntis are established in sequential stages, and upon reaching the quiescent kṣānti, original awakening is serene—originally there was no movement to reach, and now there is no stillness; therefore, this original awakening is also the root of practice of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas. Others say: 'this' refers to the five kṣāntis, which are the root of practice from beginning to end for those who generate the Mahāyāna and proceed toward the unexcelled. Regarding 'is also the root of practice of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas', it is also the root of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas in the dharmadhātu, both those who have already achieved it and those who have not. From 'this is' onward is easy to understand from the text.
