Exposition: A faithful mind that is clear and pure is the root of all goods. If one has constant faith, there is no comparison; taking only a single thought of pure faith in the sūtra surpasses the previous merit. As for "let alone," even a small amount of faith is still superior, so how much more so for one who can uphold, read, recite, and generate correct understanding in mind; its superiority is incomparable. As for "upholding" and the rest: "accepting" means receiving it, "upholding" means not forgetting it, and facing the text versus reciting from memory marks the difference between reading and chanting. As the verse on the ten dharma-practices in the Madhyāntavibhāga-śāstra says: "Copying to make offerings, giving to others, reading so that they may listen, upholding, correctly expounding, reciting, and contemplating and cultivating." The first eight are hearing, and the last two are contemplation and cultivation, which are the three wisdoms. Here four of those are present: three of hearing and one of contemplation; mentioning even their slight understanding already surpasses the former.
