Third, subsumption under vehicle: some speak of one vehicle, as the Lotus Sūtra says, "There is only the Dharma of the one vehicle; there is neither a second nor a third." Some speak of two vehicles, as the Mahāyānasaṃgraha and other texts say, "First is the Great Vehicle (Mahāyāna), which is the superior vehicle. Second is the Lesser Vehicle (Hīnayāna), which is the inferior vehicle." Some speak of three vehicles: first, the Bodhisattva Vehicle; second, the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle; third, the Śrāvaka Vehicle, because passages throughout the scriptures all say this alike. And there is the explanation of five vehicles, as commonly differentiated. Now this sūtra is subsumed under the one vehicle, for the Śrīmālādevī Sūtra states, "The one vehicle is the Great Vehicle"; and among the two or three vehicles, it is the Bodhisattva Vehicle.
