The commentary states: In the long kalpas of birth-and-death there was no occasion to hear their names. If one gets to hear them, does not give rise to doubt or slander, and deeply gives rise to pure faith—even to the minimum of a single thought-moment of pure faith—this person immediately transcends a hundred, a thousand, and so forth: that is, they transcend the various sufferings and eight difficulties of kalpas as numerous as sands, and will not be born in the evil destinies. How much more so if for a long time one accepts and upholds, recites and intones, and gives rise to [wisdom arisen from] hearing, contemplation, and cultivation—how could one not transcend them? Second, following upon this, is clarifying the attainment of bodhi.
