One who abides by these precepts should, day by day, make offerings as appropriate to the Buddha, the Dharma, the Saṅgha, and the places of their installation: at least making one bow, praising with as little as four lines, and arousing at least one moment of faith in mindfulness of their real virtues, never letting the days pass in vain, but acting with reverence and diligence. One must not give rise to great desires, and must renounce fame and gain; respectfully attend upon elders of virtue and respond to them in accord with principle; attend invitations that conform to the Dharma, accept undefiled donations, and abandon unwholesome phenomena; guard equally against offenses by nature and offenses by prohibition, yet allow them to arise as appropriate if it benefits others; abide in right livelihood and keep the three karmas tranquil; abhor and feel revulsion toward saṃsāra, desiring and rejoicing in nirvāṇa; protect oneself and clear one's name against bad reputation or praise; apologize for offenses and not retaliate against anger and mockery; govern without defilement, rest and sleep only at proper times and in moderation, and avoid banter born of attachment; seek the Dharma from a humble position and eradicate the five hindrances; not disparage the two vehicles, and thoroughly investigate the Bodhisattva Piṭaka before studying the Śrāvaka Piṭaka; become thoroughly proficient in the Buddhadharma before studying non-Buddhist treatises. Those of superior intelligence should, day by day, devote two parts of their time to Buddhist learning and one part to external teachings, approaching them as one would a pungent flavor; only when a teaching is trustworthy and lovable should one benefit and gladden others with it; upon hearing the Dharma that accords with principle, one should exert oneself to go and listen; skillfully relying on the words and meanings, respect and praise the Dharma master, and even through manifesting supernormal powers, properly attract and guide others. In all such cases, if one's mind is deranged, if one is oppressed by severe suffering, if one has not yet received the pure precepts, or if one abides in the ten grounds, there is no transgression; one should know that doing the opposite of the above constitutes a transgression. If one commits an offense of the upper entanglement, one must confess and eradicate it in accordance with the Dharma before three or more persons who understand the various vehicles, and receive the precepts again after confession; if it is an offense of the lower or middle entanglement, one should disclose it before a single person. If there is no one present before whom one can eradicate it, one should make a vow with a pure intention never to commit it again. Thereby one emerges from the offense and is restored to purity.
