Vigor is the courageous three karmas when cultivating wholesome qualities. This briefly has three kinds: First, vigor of armor-like application. That is, before cultivating good, one's mind gives rise to courage, first donning the armor of vows: 'If now, to liberate one sentient being from suffering, I must treat a thousand great eons as a single day and night, or exceed this by a hundred thousand times, constantly dwelling in hell before realizing bodhi, my courage will still not retrogress; how much less when the time passed is short and the suffering is slight?' If one can give rise to even a fraction of faith and understanding in this, it will still nourish immeasurable causes of great bodhi, how much more so when accomplished? Therefore, in the stage of cultivating good, one has not the slightest timidity or inferiority. Second, vigor of gathering the wholesome. That is, this can induce and fulfill all practices, unshaken by all conceptualizations, afflictions, divergent doctrines, and painful contacts, practicing earnestly and even free from conceit; the Bhagavat constantly praises vigor, for it can fulfill the good and swiftly realize bodhi. Third, vigor of benefiting sentient beings. That is, the various exertions in benefiting and gladdening sentient beings as previously explained, thus leaving behind thoughts of bodily requisites and utensils, uninterrupted and without neglect throughout the entirety of one's lifetime, equally comprehending, aligned with virtues, neither slack nor hurried, cultivating without error, able to cause defiled phenomena not to arise and to be eradicated, and also causing white phenomena to arise anew and expand; the three karmas are purified, the three wisdoms increase, and one practices diligently and courageously without abandonment, without retrogression, without inferiority, and without error; endowed with power, diligence, courage, and firmness, not laying down the wholesome yoke, cultivating fierce desire without weariness, like extinguishing a fire on one's head, swiftly severing afflictions, practicing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, protecting oneself and benefiting others.
