Next, one should draw close to good spiritual friends (kalyāṇamitra). Having precepts without breach or flaw, extensive learning, cultivation and realization, compassion, fearlessness, patient endurance, tirelessness, and clear, distinct speech are called the characteristics of a good spiritual friend. Seeking to bestow benefit and happiness, possessing correct knowledge in this regard, having power and skillful means, benefiting without abandonment, and having great compassion without partiality are what make one a good spiritual friend. Their deeds are not in vain, their deportment is complete, their speech and conduct are sincere and solemn, free from pretension and jealousy, and they are frugal in retaining possessions, relinquishing them readily; this is what makes a good spiritual friend who can be relied upon and trusted. Admonishing to prompt remembrance, giving instruction, giving admonition, and being capable of explaining the Dharma: these are the deeds of a good spiritual friend toward the beings to be transformed. Whether they are sick or not sick, cherishing and respecting them, making offerings and serving them, eagerly inquiring after them, welcoming and paying homage to them, cultivating harmonious and respectful actions, providing the four necessities and utensils without lack and in accordance with the proper time, going to respectfully serve them, and inquiring and listening without distraction: this is called drawing close.
