Commentary: Sixth, there are seven joys of benefiting others and benefiting oneself, because they surpass harming others and oneself. The first four benefit others, and the latter three benefit oneself. This [passage] concerns benefiting others. "Beings of one's own kind" refers to those of the same class of supramundane pure conduct (brahmacarya); seeing their merits, one always delights in drawing close to them, and seeing those different from this kind, one does not harbor hatred either. One delights in drawing close to good friends, because good [qualities] increase; one protects bad friends, so that faults do not arise. The *Bodhisattvabhūmi* states: "Morality unbroken and unblemished, possessing erudition, cultivation, and realization, compassionate and fearless, tolerant without weariness, with eloquent and clear speech—these are called the characteristics of a good friend." Seeking to bestow benefit and joy, having correct knowledge regarding this, possessing power and skillful means, providing benefit without abandonment, great compassion without partiality—this is called a good friend. Actions not in vain, comportment complete, speech and conduct sincere and grave, free from deceit and jealousy, frugal in possessions and following detachment, admonishing and reminding, providing instruction and admonition, able to expound the Dharma—this is called a good friend who can be relied upon and trusted. Whether sick or not sick, reverently and lovingly serving them, leaning forward to greet, inquire, and bow, cultivating harmonious and respectful conduct, providing the four requirements and personal implements without lack and in accordance with the times, visiting them for matters of respectful conduct, inquiring and listening without disturbance—this is called drawing close. Therefore, in these instances, there is the joy of delighting in drawing close.
