Dhyāna is the one-pointedness of mind preceded by hearing and thinking. This has three kinds: First, dhyāna of dwelling in happiness in the present life, which refers to being free from discrimination, torpor, restlessness, and signs of attachment, able to generate pliancy, tranquility, and samādhi. Second, dhyāna of inducing supernormal powers, which refers to the samādhi able to induce and abide in supernormal powers. Third, dhyāna of benefiting sentient beings, which refers to all samādhis for the sake of benefiting and gladdening [sentient beings]. By relying on dhyāna, one can accomplish mantras, quell calamities, eliminate diseases, bring sweet rain, eradicate fears, bestow wealth and status, provide food and drink, admonish against negligence, perform what ought to be done, manifest supernormal powers, prophecies, instructions, and transformations, and even emit light, quelling all sufferings, and also permanently severing all heavy obscurations.
