'There were four asuras': from this point down is the fourth, listing the assembly of asuras. 'A-' means 'without' and 'sura' means 'wine', so they are called 'spirits without wine'. Because of attaining [this rebirth] through inferior good, they are not actually ghosts, but because they are mostly deceitful and crooked, they are demoted to spirits; the retribution of spirits mostly craves wine, but these asuras, through the conditions of supernormal powers, do not drink wine at all. 'Balin' translates as 'bound'. Vemacitra had a daughter named Śacī, whose appearance was lovely and who was cherished by Śakra; Śakra brought her back to heaven to be his chief consort. Once she became consort, he did not communicate with his father-in-law, so King Vemacitra sent Balin leading troops to wage war against Śakra. Since Śakra served the Tathāgata, he constantly chanted the prajñā dhāraṇī; by the power of the dhāraṇī, Balin was consequently bound. 'Kharaskandha' translates as 'broad shoulders'. 'Vemacitra' is the father-in-law of Śakra; by tradition there is no translation. 'Rāhu Asura' translates as 'covering and obstructing'. His arms and legs are extremely long; at times he uses his hands to obstruct and cover the sun and moon, hence he is called 'covering and obstructing'.
